The LEC Summer playoffs opened at the Madrid Arena on 5 September 2026, and by Sunday evening two of Europe's three Worlds slots were gone.
The format is six teams, double elimination, every match a best-of-five with Fearless Draft — the ruleset where champions used earlier in a series cannot be picked again. It punishes one-trick rosters and rewards depth, which over five games is a genuinely different test from what teams face in the regular season.
Saturday ran both upper semifinals. Karmine Corp beat GIANTX 3–1, and G2 Esports swept Team Vitality 3–0. Sunday put those winners against each other, and G2 took the upper final 3–1 over Karmine Corp.
That single result did more than decide seeding. G2 went straight to the grand final; Karmine Corp dropped to the lower bracket final. Because Europe's three Worlds qualifiers are the two grand finalists plus the loser of the lower bracket final, both teams were mathematically locked into the World Championship before the second weekend started.
Which left one slot and four teams, fighting through the lower bracket for the right to lose to Karmine Corp and still qualify. It is an odd incentive structure to describe out loud, and it produced the most interesting League of Legends of the month.
Movistar KOI won that fight. Five games past Vitality in the lower quarterfinals, four past Natus Vincere in the semis, then a 3–0 sweep of Karmine Corp in the lower final — beating the team that had already qualified, to qualify. G2 then swept MKOI 3–0 in the grand final on 21 September for a fourth consecutive LEC title and their twentieth overall.
So Europe sends G2 Esports, Movistar KOI and Karmine Corp to Worlds 2026. The same weekend, the CBLOL Split 2 playoffs opened in São Paulo with an identical six-team bracket, settling Brazil's qualifier.
Four straight titles for a single organisation would be a story of stagnation in most sports. In this one it is closer to a reference point — the standard everyone else in the region is measured against, and has not yet cleared.
The final itself lands on 14 November at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the first time the East Coast has hosted it. G2 have been here before. That has not previously guaranteed anything.
