Sony Ran Two State of Plays in One Night

Published on Sep 3, 2026

Sony did not run a State of Play on 3 September 2026. It ran two, back to back, and covered more than thirty games between them.

The main broadcast came first, followed immediately by a separate State of Play Japan hosted by Yuki Kaji and dedicated entirely to Japanese and Asian studios. Splitting the show that way is a reasonable answer to a problem Sony has had for years: a single global stream always ends up shortchanging one audience or the other.

The headline was Final Fantasy VII Revelation, which closed the main show with an extended look and a release date of 8 April 2027. That is the third and final part of the remake project — a trilogy that started in 2020 and will have taken seven years by the time it lands. Until Dawn 2 was dated 28 January 2027 and Metro 2039 for 4 February 2027.

Marvel's Wolverine got its final trailer ahead of a 15 September launch, leaning hard on Sentinels, Bolivar Trask's mutant-hunting programme, and a roster including Jean Grey, Sabretooth, Omega Red, Lady Deathstrike and Mystique. Ghost of Yotei announced a hardcore roguelite survival mode, playable as several Yotei characters plus Jin from Tsushima.

The stranger inclusion was the opening. Director Zach Cregger showed an exclusive clip from his Resident Evil film ahead of its 18 September premiere — a Raccoon City sequence with Austin Abrams' character swarmed by infected townspeople. A film clip opening a games showcase is not unprecedented, but it still says something about who Sony thinks is watching.

What did not appear is its own list. No God of War Laufey, no Intergalactic. For a broadcast this stuffed, the absences were conspicuous enough to become their own discussion.

Meanwhile, The Blood of Dawnwalker launched the same day — a fourteenth-century vampire action RPG from Rebel Wolves, a studio built largely from ex-CD Projekt Red developers. Its thirty-day time system, where the clock runs against you, became the most argued-about thing in the reviews: mostly praised, occasionally called overbearing, occasionally called less consequential than advertised.

It sold a million copies in three days. Within a week Rebel Wolves was hiring for a sequel, and the narrative director has been clear the studio sees this as the start of something longer.

Two showcases and a million-selling launch in a single day is a lot of September to spend at once. The rest of the month had to work hard to follow it.
